Part One of the Steady in the Seasons series

“To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”
Ecclesiastes 3:1

Some seasons arrive with plenty of warning. We see them approaching on the calendar. We prepare, make plans, and begin adjusting our routines before they ever arrive.

Other seasons seem to change overnight.

One day, life feels familiar. The next, something has shifted. A door closes. A routine changes. A relationship enters unfamiliar territory. A child needs us differently. A plan we once felt certain about no longer seems to fit. Sometimes the change is exciting. Sometimes it is painful. More often than not, it is a mixture of both.

When the Familiar Begins to Shift

I have walked through several changing seasons in recent years. I stepped away from a career I once thought would remain part of my life for much longer. I became a stay-at-home and homeschooling mother. I began taking my writing more seriously and eventually became a published author.

Some changes were chosen. Others were shaped by circumstances I would not have chosen for myself.

Even the changes I prayed for required adjustment. An answered prayer can still lead us into unfamiliar territory. A new beginning can hold gratitude and uncertainty at the same time. That part is especially true.

Change has a way of revealing where we have placed our security. When the familiar begins to shift, we may realize how much comfort we found in a role, a routine, a plan, or our own understanding of what life was supposed to look like.

That does not make us faithless. It makes us human. However, it also gives us an opportunity to remember where our true foundation is found.

The One Who Remains the Same

Hebrews 13:8 tells us:

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.”

Our circumstances change, but Jesus does not. The God who carried us through the last season will still be God in the next one. His character is not altered by our circumstances. His faithfulness does not weaken when our plans change. His presence does not depend upon life feeling familiar. All of the what ifs are minute compared to God’s plan for our lives.

Psalm 102:27 says, “But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.”

There is comfort in knowing that nothing catches God by surprise. He does not need time to adjust to a change He already foresaw. While we are trying to understand what is happening, He remains steady.

He is still good.
He is still faithful.
He is still present.

God Is Present in the Changing

We often view stability as the absence of change. We feel steady when life is predictable and our plans are unfolding as expected. The sense of control becomes a security blanket for us, when we should not rely on a controlled outcome. Biblical stability, however, is not built upon predictable circumstances. It is built upon an unchanging God.

Daniel 2:21 reminds us that God “changeth the times and the seasons.” He is not merely watching the seasons of our lives pass by. He remains sovereign over them.

This does not mean every change will be easy to understand. There may be moments when we grieve what a season held, even while trusting God with what comes next. There may also be days when we want Him to show us the entire path before we are willing to take the next step.

Yet, God rarely asks us to understand everything before trusting Him. He asks us to remain close to Him while He leads.

Something New May Already Be Growing

When a season ends, our natural response is often to look back. We replay what happened, wonder what we could have done differently, or wish we could return to what felt comfortable. I often struggle with this on occasion, especially when a season is extra challenging that it should be. 

But Isaiah 43:18–19 says:

“Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing.”

New things do not always look promising at first. Seeds begin beneath the soil, where no one can see them. Before there is visible growth, there is a hidden process of breaking open, taking root, and reaching toward the light. The same can be true in our lives.

What appears to be an ending may also be the soil of a new beginning. What feels uncertain may be where God is developing deeper trust. What looks empty may already contain the first signs of something He is preparing. We may not recognize it yet, but that does not mean He is not working.

Steady Does Not Mean Unaffected

Remaining steady in a changing season does not mean pretending the change does not affect us.

We can trust God and still need time to adjust. We can believe He is leading while still grieving what we are leaving behind. We can have faith and still admit that we feel uncertain. Can and still. Those two words exist in the same sentence yet hold such significance to us in that season.

Steadiness is not the absence of emotion. It is the decision to continue anchoring ourselves to God in the middle of it. James 1:17 describes Him as the Father “with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

Everything around us may seem to be moving, but God is not shifting beneath our feet.

Holding On Through the Change

Perhaps, you are standing at the beginning of a new season today. Maybe you know something is ending, but you cannot yet see what will replace it. Perhaps, a change you wanted has arrived, yet it feels more overwhelming than you expected. Maybe life shifted without your permission, and you are still trying to find your footing.

You do not have to know everything about the season ahead to trust the God who will meet you there. The same Jesus who walked with you yesterday is present today. He will remain faithful tomorrow.

Seasons will change.
Plans will change.
We will change.

But, God will remain the same. And, when everything else feels uncertain, we can hold on to the One who does not change.
