There is something about pouring a cup of coffee, getting comfy under the blanket on the couch, and having a Bible in your lap before the sun peaks through the darkness. The stillness of the early hours opened a door to a new beginning each day that God blessed. In the early hours, our guard is still down, where we are vulnerable by faith. As that contradicts itself, it is a truth that remains as a forefront in our mind and soul, even when we are in denial of our shortcomings and struggles that we have created a hedge of forced resilience around us in our portrayal to others.
As I felt like I was drowning emotionally and physically during this difficult chapter I am enduring, I failed to notice that I became disconnected in my desire to feel connected. Deep down, I knew I needed to have my quality time with God so I could refill my spiritual cup, yet I was so burdened with the desire of practicing self-care from being emotionally, mentally, and spiritually drained as a wife, mother, and a woman of God.
Being vulnerable by faith is something that one would not think of right away because we are called to have faith. Yet, in order to embark on that calling, we are to become vulnerable in the sense of shedding our layers to respond to our God-given call to sow our seeds and harvest what we sow. We all hide behind our layers, even as Christians. Behind a smile may hide the feeling of being isolated. Behind the helpfulness may hide the feeling of insecurity. Behind well spoken words may hide a loss of direction. Behind the attention to detail may hide the overwhelming feeling of anxiety. No one knows what the outer coating hides beneath the surface.
Sometimes we become accustomed to the layers that engulf us that we forget or are unable to recognize how we can grow and bear fruit in how God intended for us to bless others. It does not mean we are wrong for clinging to something that we feel that is a part of us because we are only human, but we cannot become the harvest for others when we remain within the layers that hide what is in our hearts.
How do we shed these layers when it feels like ” we are alone” or “no one understands?” Though it is obvious, it is prayer for the Holy Spirit to bring the right person to give a reassurance to remind us of who we are in Christ. It is incredibly easy to forget that we are in a spiritual battle, and these every day challenges, whether big or small, brings our focus on our layers surrounded rather than above us.
This reminds me the old hymn, Blessed Assurance. The lyric of “this is my story, this is my song…” rings true in our lives as each one of us is God’s children created with a purpose. Every day, every trial, and every mustard seed of faith we surrender to God is what breaks down our layers to reveal our story for those who cling to hope. After all, we are all different seeds that God plants for the purpose of sharing our story to bless others– our song becomes the healing peace to those we know and those we may never meet.
